Jamie Raskin Freaks Out After Bombshell Trump Ruling, Issues Weak Threat

Democrats in the U.S. House are threatening to reintroduce legislation that would establish a system for deciding whether a candidate like former President Donald Trump is guilty of insurrection and thereby barred from ever again running for federal office.

Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) spoke on CNN in the wake of a unanimous 9-0 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court declaring no state has the power to deny a federal candidate like Trump from appearing on the national ballot. The Maryland Democrat promised to “revive” an effort started by Democrats that floundered after Republicans took control over the lower chamber in 2022.

“I’m working with a number of my colleagues including Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA) to revive legislation that we had to set up a process by which we could determine if someone who committed insurrection is disqualified by Section III of the 14th Amendment,” Raskin said.

“The House of Representatives already impeached Donald Trump for participating in insurrection by inciting it,” he added.

Rep. Raskin’s promise to continue pursuing legal avenues to deny Trump a fair fight against President Joe Biden ensures that the high court’s ruling will only encourage anti-Trump forces to look for other outlets where they can direct their rage. Other attempts by Democratic lawmakers and secretaries of state in Illinois and Maine are now invalidated as a result of Monday’s ruling as well.

Following the January 6th, 2021 breach at the Capitol, a select committee was formed to investigate how the event could have occurred and whether President Trump was complicit in encouraging his supporters to march on Washington and protect the certification of President Biden’s win. The committee was stacked with anti-Trump Republicans like former Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom helped the committee release selective video from J6 that implicated Trump and allies like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO). The committee concluded that President Trump incited the violence.

House Republicans have pushed back on that narrative since taking the gavel away from former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has promised to reinvigorate investigations into the role that FBI agents played on the ground that day and has provided Tucker Carlson with an unredacted set of J6 footage that contains up to 20,000 hours of previously unreleased clips.

“We’ve uncovered a lot of evidence that is contrary to what they were telling us. There are not only flaws in their report; there are some flat-out lies in the report,” Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) said of the new House select committee. “And the further we go down this path, the more that we’re uncovering. Probably one of the biggest things I think that we saw happen in the last year that we discovered had happened was the number of documents that were not preserved and were not passed along to our committee as the House Rules mandated.”

“We are going to find these documents. And the reason it’s important is because I believe it’s what’s in those documents, which is why they don’t want us to see it,” he told Just The News.
