David Axelrod Sounds The Alarm, Warns Democrats
Veteran Democratic Party political strategist David Axelrod warned that there is a lack of enthusiasm for the Harris-Walz Campaign among Election Day Democrat voters.
“What are you most worried about right now?” Axelrod, who was an architect of Barack Obama’s crushing victory in 2008, was asked during a recent appearance on CNN.
“Well, look, the watchword of the day is humility here. When you have polls that are this close, and I’m sitting next to one of the great pollsters, if you, and I think she would tell you, when you have polls this close, you’re not sure of anything. And it really matters who shows up,” Axelrod answered. “Because these polls are not precise.”
According to the RealClearPolitics national polling average, Trump and Harris are effectively tied, with the former president leading by just one-tenth of a percentage point. This represents a massive improvement for Trump when compared with 2016 and 2020 polling results, however, as the former president trailed by more than five percentage points in both contests.
Trump leads in five of seven battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and Nevada, where he has at least a one-point cushion in each. The margin is much tighter in Pennsylvania, where Trump leads by just 0.7 percent, while Harris is holding onto small leads of 0.4 and 1.2 in Wisconsin and Michigan respectively.
Axelrod expressed concern with the tight polling margins, warning Democrats that Harris could underperform due to party expectations for crossover Republican votes and massive turnout among women voters.
“So what I’m worried about is how are, you’re counting on some women who are independent Republican women to come out and vote for Harris. Is that going to materialize? Is the gender gap going to be what you need it to be? Are minority voters going to come out in the numbers of African American voters in particular?” he said. “And are you going to get the margins that you want there? So there are a lot of open questions, and they’re obviously working it hard right now. There are feet on the street, and they’re doing the kind of work that you do in a race like this.”
“But this race is filled with uncertainty today.”
