Sean Duffy, the new Transportation Secretary for the Trump administration, has officially announced that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is working on a project to help upgrade the aviation system. He then took an opportunity to offer some pushback to a response made by twice-failed Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“Big News – Talked to the DOGE team. They are going to plug in to help upgrade our aviation system,” Duffy said in a post published on X. Clinton then responded to the post by saying, “They have no relevant experience. Most of them aren’t old enough to rent a car. And you’re going to let them mess with airline safety that’s already deteriorated on your watch?”
It didn’t take long for Duffy to issue a fiery response of his own to Clinton’s comment, saying, “Madam Secretary, with all due respect, ‘experienced’ Washington bureaucrats are the reason our nation’s infrastructure is crumbling. You need to sit this one out.”
Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X and CEO of SpaceX, who is heading up DOGE in order to help expose government waste spending and fraud, stated that his team is going to work to implement “safety upgrades to the air traffic control system.”
“With the support of President @realDonaldTrump, the @DOGE team will aim to make rapid safety upgrades to the air traffic control system. Just a few days ago, the FAA’s primary aircraft safety notification system failed for several hours!” Musk wrote in response to Duffy’s announcement.
A user on the platform wrote a response to Musk saying, “My brother first developed the method of accurately navigating airlines by GPS, 45 years ago. He expected an automated air traffic system long ago. It’s time to do it now. Get rid of 75-year-old ATC radar. Put all the planes on a 3-D map. All paths straight to landing.”
Musk agreed.
The X exchange comes hot on the heels of a pair of fatal aviation crashes over the course of the last week in the United States. One involved the collision of a Black Hawk helicopter with three soldiers inside of it with an American Airlines passenger jet in D.C. The other involved a Learjet 55 medevac jet that crashed near a mall in Philadelphia and killed seven individuals.
The bodies of all 67 passengers who were on board the American Airlines jet have been recovered from the Potomac River.
“The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner continues its work to ensure the dignified return of remains to their families and continue supporting the families through this process,” a statement released by the officials involved in recovery efforts went on to say.
It went on to state that crews from several agencies are continuing to search the area for “potential wreckage identification for recovery by salvage crews.”
Data culled from the air traffic control tower screens in the area showed the Black Hawk was flying at an altitude of 300 feet at the time of the collision last week.
