BREAKING: Federal Charges Filed Against Hunter Biden on Multiple Tax Counts, Gun Violation
Hunter Biden is being charged for federal tax violations and a gun charge, according to a breaking news report by NBC on Tuesday morning.
“Federal charges have been filed against Hunter Biden in a case involving taxes and gun possession charge, he is expected to plead guilty to the tax charges only,” NBC reported. “He is expected to get pre-trial diversion for the gun charge.”
Hunter Biden has been the subject of a federal investigation since 2018, focusing on potential tax violations, foreign lobbying violations, and other matters.
The investigation is led by Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed as a prosecutor by former President Donald Trump.
A federal grand jury has been examining the case, and sources have confirmed that it has reached a crucial stage to determine whether charges will be filed.
Among the more serious charges still under consideration is a violation of foreign lobbying laws. Biden could potentially also face charges related to false statements.
In December 2020, it was confirmed that Hunter Biden was the subject/target of the grand jury investigation.
Being a “target” implies a high probability of having committed a crime, while a “subject” indicates someone who is not yet known for certain to have committed a crime.
The federal investigation into Hunter Biden was prompted, in part, by Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) concerning suspicious foreign transactions.
Another source familiar with the investigation informed Fox News in December 2020 that the SARs pertained to funds originating from “China and other foreign nations.”
A Treasury Department official, who did not comment on the investigation, explained the nature of SARs, stating that financial institutions file them “if there is something out of the ordinary about a particular transaction.”
The official clarified that the filing of a SAR alone does not indicate a criminal act or regulatory violation, but rather signifies that a transaction is unusual for a particular customer. However, the official acknowledged that a SAR could be part of a money laundering or tax investigation.
Weeks after the 2020 presidential election, Hunter Biden released a statement acknowledging the federal investigation into his “tax affairs.”
“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” Hunter Biden said in the December 2020 statement.
