Joe Biden’s ‘Spray Tan’ Memes

Joe Biden’s recent appearance with a summer tan that recalls Donald Trump’s signature orange hue has sparked a deluge of jokes and memes on social media. The president continues navigating uncertain waters after his debate performance last week.

“Biden using Trump’s spray tan,” wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter. “Pumpkin Joe,” wrote another on the social-media platform, sharing an image of Joe Biden next to a frame from Star Wars showing character Obi-Wan Kenobi (interpreted by actor Ewan McGregor) saying: “You have become the very thing you swore to destroy”—a clear reference to Trump’s orange glow.

Days after the debate in Atlanta, Georgia, last week, which saw Biden stumble over his words and lose his train of thought on several occasions, reinforcing widespread fears over his mental and physical fitness as he runs for reelection in November, Biden showed off a strong tan on Monday. Yesterday, the president gave a televised statement following the Supreme Court’s ruling that granted Trump partial immunity from criminal prosecution. It was a decision that Biden said undermined the rule of law.

“Today’s [court] decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a president may do,” Biden said. The court’s 6-3 decision ruled that a president has immunity for “official acts” but not for “unofficial acts.”

“The man who sent that mob to the U.S. Capitol is facing potential criminal conviction for what happened that day. The American people deserve to have an answer in the courts before the upcoming election,” the Democratic president added.

However, for many watching the televised speech, what really grabbed their attention was Biden’s tan, rather than his words.

“To be fair to the president, it’s July 4 week. Who among us did not get a spray tan and deliver a four-minute rant to the family about a coequal partner who didn’t say exactly what I wanted him to say exactly as I wanted it said?” podcaster Mary Katherine Ham wrote on X.

Several users shared photos of Biden’s tan referring to the “Orange Man,” a way to refer to Trump. “New message: Orange Man Good,” one such post reads.

Biden’s much-discussed tan has appeared only days after his team reportedly criticized CNN, who hosted the presidential debate last Thursday, for making him look “pale and pallid” and covering his natural summer tan.

But the mockery over what many are calling a “fake” or “spray tan” shows that the backlash from the shaky debate is still affecting Biden. The president has been urged by his family to stay in the White House race amid growing pressure from Democratic strategists and left-leaning media pundits for him to stand down for the good of the country.

Addressing concerns over his age at a campaign event in North Carolina last week, Biden said that he is not the politician he used to be, but added that he’s still able to run the country.

“I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious,” he said on Friday. “I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job.”
