Mel Gibson Has Priceless Response To Trump’s California Visit
Legendary actor and director Mel Gibson, who has long resided in the Los Angeles area, had a hilarious reaction to President Trump’s visit to the fire-stricken city over the weekend.
President Trump arrived in California on Friday night after meeting with Hurricane Helene survivors earlier in the day. The president pledged to provide full federal support to both disaster areas and implored California’s Democrat leaders to work with him on it.
After arriving at LAX, the president surveyed the damage from the devastating Pacific Palisades fire that torched more than 23,000 acres. As part of the tour, the president met with several residents and listened to complaints about the cleanup process and how to best build back.
He then held a roundtable with state and Los Angeles city leaders on Friday night, Trump pressed Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on rebuilding and recovery efforts.
“Six months is no good,” Trump said, pointing to complaints about the lengthy processes to clear debris and start rebuilding processes. “And the number one thing that we are going to do immediately, and you will see this happen, is to clear out the debris. And you know we’re concerned right now over the weekend because of the potential rain, but we are going to move as fast as we can, but we want you to be safe. We want you to be back in your homes immediately,” Bass then replied.
Trump responded by stating that multiple residents have offered to clear the debris themselves, though they have not been permitted to do so by the city government. “You should let them do it because by the time you hire contractors it’s going to be two years. If a family… If people are willing to get a dumpster and do it themselves and clean it out, there’s not that much left. It’s all incinerated,” he said.
Bass later thanked the president for the meeting in a social media post. “Thank you, President Trump for coming to Los Angeles to help us rebuild,” the mayor posted on X. “We are grateful for your partnership.”
Gibson — who has long been outspoken about his support for President Trump — had a hilarious response to Trump’s firm handling of California’s Democrat leaders while speaking with Fox News host Sean Hannity. “It’s like daddy arrived and he’s taking his belt off, ” the legendary actor joked. “So I think he’ll get some results here quickly.”
Gibson, 69, recently revealed that his Malibu mansion was completely incinerated in one of the worst wildfire outbreaks in the city’s history. “I’m doing good. You know, it’s just a thing. But, you know, it is obviously kind of devastating. It’s emotional,” Gibson shared in an interview with NewsNation. “You live there for a long time and you had all your stuff. You remember George Carlin talking about your stuff?” Reflecting on the loss of personal items accumulated over the years, he added with a wry sense of humor, “I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders.”
The actor was in Austin, Texas, recording a podcast with Joe Rogan when the fire erupted. “I was kind of ill at ease while we were talking because I knew my neighborhood was on fire,” Gibson said. “I thought, I wonder if my place is still there. But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there.”
Hannity questioned the “Braveheart” actor on the effects of the blaze and his thoughts on the response from Democrat leaders during Friday night’s interview. The Fox News host pointed to numerous issues with the state and city’s fire response, including cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department, lack of water in hydrants and lack of preparedness despite advanced warning of severe winds before asking Gibson for his thoughts.
The “Mad Max” star stated that he mostly feels sorry for his neighbors, describing them as a “good bunch” who will now be tasked with an arduous rebuild. Gibson added that “you meet people all the time who’ve lost their homes. And you talk and commiserate and buck each other up, and everyone’s putting on a brave face. They’re a good bunch out here.”
Gibson will be working with the administration throughout Trump’s second term. On January 16, President Trump announced that Gibson, along with fellow Hollywood heavyweights Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone, would be serving as “special ambassadors to Hollywood” as part of a new cultural effort.
“It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”
