Hollywood Actor and Scientologist Sentenced After Raping Two Former Members Of The Church of Scientology

A judge has sentenced “That 70s Show” actor Danny Masterson to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women.

Masterson was a member of the Church of Scientology when he drugged and raped two other women who were part of the Church of Scientology at the time.

In a response to Masterson’s sentencing actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini tweeted “For over two decades, Danny Masterson avoided accountability for his crimes. ”

She continued “While Danny was the only one sentenced, his conviction and sentence are indictments against Scientology, its operatives, and its criminal leader, David Miscavige.”

Here’s what AP reported:

A judge sentenced “That ’70s Show” show star Danny Masterson to 30 years to life in prison Thursday for raping two women, giving them some relief after they spoke in court about the decades of damage he inflicted.

“When you raped me, you stole from me,” said one woman who Masterson was convicted of raping in 2003. “That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit.”

“You are pathetic, disturbed and completely violent,” she said. “The world is better off with you in prison.”

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo handed down the sentence to the 47-year-old Masterson after hearing statements from the women, and pleas for fairness from defense attorneys.

The actor, who has been in custody since May, sat in court wearing a suit. Masterson watched the women without visible reaction as they spoke. He maintains his innocence and his attorneys plan to appeal.

Per BBC:

US actor Danny Masterson has been sentenced to serve 30 years to life in prison for raping two women.

Masterson starred on That ’70s Show, a TV series that was airing at the time of his crimes in the early 2000s.

Prosecutors argued Masterson, 47, had relied on his status as a prominent Scientologist to avoid accountability.

Judge Charlaine Olmedo allowed the victims of his crimes to read impact statements in court ahead of his sentencing.

Prominent former Scientologist and actress Leah Remini attended Thursday’s hearing and comforted the women before and after they delivered their statements.

“I wished I had reported him earlier to the police,” one of the women said, according to US media.

Another woman told Masterson: “I forgive you. Your sickness is no longer mine to bear,” according to Reuters.
